In this week's episode, we interview the very talented Blair Smith, who goes by the name of DJ B.E. She is pursuing her PhD in Cultural Foundations of Education at Syracuse University, where she is integrating her love for mixing with black feminist poetry. We discuss how Richmond, Virginia influenced her musical tastes and the first time she fell in love with hip-hop.
We discussed her love for D'Angelo and his Voodoo album, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and even Bow Wow. She is a community organizer and empowers young black women through a collective called We Levitate. She recalls the time she recorded with poet Nikky Finney and the importance of sampling in hip-hop. Blair also discusses the responsibility of the Black artist in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement. She breaks down her track "4thapeople" and also let's us in on who she'd love to work with musically in the future.
