Esther Foreman has spent 20 years in the social-good space, time spent running award-winning campaigns, supporting enterprise and building teams. Her career went from Doctors without Borders, Shelter, Help the Aged and Mencap to the Social Change Agency, where she supports over 600 organisations to grow, innovate and support people through fiscal and process hosting.   

We start with some excellent (though quite niche) holiday advice from James before we wonder whether our latest guest is related to Kenneth, and then we dive into a packed episode including a failed PhD, how leadership and cults go wrong and the magic in decentralised technology. There’s a life-changing meeting with Bob Geldof, a reminder of Kenneth’s cover-star status and the unique challenges for middle-children. A high-brow start to the show this week with a mention on PMQs before we dive into CSR, ESG and DB. Then it's Downing Street to Guatemala, making good decisions and learning on the job. 

We're joined by Kerry McNally, Group Head of Communities at Flutter Entertainment, to talk through what Corporate Social Responsibility or Environment Social and Governance means in the corporate world. Kerry explains how she didn't take a typical career path, mobilising 10,000 people and achieving the dream of exponential impact. We discuss investing in relationships, three-pint focus groups and cringing at puns (but using them anyway). 

Kenneth ends by penning a litter-based love-letter to Ron before James get's back to Parent's Evening.

"Organising a Careers Fair to find a job for myself."

Tired from the hotel gym, Kenneth lets our guest do the heavy lifting as we discuss the megatrends which have impacted the fundraising environment. "Targets, nasty people and shoulder pads"

Kenneth has spent all his pocket money in the IFC tuck shop before we meet Helena Sharpstone (the only one on the internet) for a delightful conversation through her career, including her start in sales, an extended honeymoon period in non-profits and why she's investing her own pocket money in chilli plants.

Before she reveals how taking an interview for a bet nearly horribly backfired, she talks about healing in the sector, how she finds there's more creativity when there's less resource, people adapting from difficult experiences and the similarities between sales and fundraising.

"We're in revolutionary times"

Kenneth and James flashed their access all areas passes to sneak backstage at IFC. They managed to grab a seat in the Press Room for a conversation between two big-hitters, Bill Toliver and Erica Chenoweth before the latter takes to the big stage for their plenary speech.

They dive straight in talking people power; revolution; divide and rule; and power relations between our opponents. Erica describes the power of hope and the critical mass for societal change as well as describing their work writing a Phd in violent conflict. There’s the power and dangers of digital in movements and surveillance, the ice bucket challenge and the most beautiful mullets of 1983 before Kenneth made a pitch for ‘smartest person in the room’ by braving a question at the end (a valiant but doomed effort).

"People like their charity workers poor."

We head to the bar at the International Fundraising Congress, and the corner marked 'Dull' for a conversation with Peter and Tash from DTV delving deep into the latest film release - Uncharitable. It's a feature-length movie building on Dan Pallotta's TED Talk, you know the one.

We begin with dreams of being a film director and starting out roughing it at Goldman Sachs before diving into overheads, CEO pay, marketing, risk appetite and rushing to get a version released to show at IFC. We talk the best plenary sessions ever, differing views on funding and a focus on impact rather than income.
