"Do our words really matter?" Julia and Candace Episode 16

Listen Later

Do the words we choose to say and/or write, really matter?

In this episode of the Indie Author Insider Podcast, I am joined by a reader who shares why the frequent use of words like "stuttered" to describe nervousness or hesitation in books can be harmful to people who actually live with a neurological speech disorder. Together, we discuss the importance of thoughtful language, authentic representation, and how small changes in word choice can make stories more inclusive without sacrificing emotion or impact.

This conversation isn't about criticizing authors. It's about learning, growing, and recognizing that language has power. As writers, readers, and members of the book community, we all have opportunities to create spaces where more people feel seen and respected.

If you believe respectful representation matters in storytelling, leave a heart in the comments.

We'd also love to hear your thoughts by answering the questions below:
Have you ever noticed words or phrases in books that made you stop and think? How can authors balance creative expression with thoughtful representation?

Be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode, and let's have a respectful conversation in the comments!

Thank you, Julia, for educating us on this topic and for being transparent with the bookish community! We appreciate you more than you know!
