The carrot beats the stick, encouragement conquers criticism, positive squashes negative and expecting the best whips cynicism. Treat others as you’d like to be treated is the two way road of truth; would you respond better to being encouraged or someone criticising you? If you’re having a sticky relationship with someone that's doing less than best, maybe try to build them up rather than making them feel less.
