Statistics tell us that over 50% of the Western world has some kind of belief in hell. Hell has been imagined in a number of ways over the ages, but most recently as some kind of spiritual wasteland, located somewhere in the underworld or bowels of the earth, where people who acted badly or who refused to hold proper beliefs are sent for eternal torment and punishment.  

Question: Where did this particular conception of hell come from? Many have assumed that it came from the bible. But did it? You might be surprised!

This Sunday, I want to explore when and where some of the most popular conceptions of hell came from and what exactly the bible has to say about it. And, perhaps surprising to some, I would like to share ways in which holding various conceptions of hell can actually be helpful.
