I believe every child of God wants to be used in the service of his Heavenly Father. If you are truly saved, the Holy Spirit indwells you and puts that desire in your heart. Also, you will not only desire to be used of God and see people saved, but there is a desire in your heart to lead someone - a mate, a family member, a friend - to Jesus as Savior. Those desires may be buried under years of inactivity and excuses, but if you are saved they are there (I John 2:3-6)! Our text deals with the account of David & Goliath - something almost every person in America has heard, or is familiar with. Motivational speakers & those who want to encourage others use this account from the Bible. They encourage people to be Davids before their Goliaths. They say, “If David could do it, you can do it.” Well, that’s not what this event is about at all. Never before have God’s people & the Lord’s churches in America been challenged as we are being challenged today. In sitcoms, in dramas, in movies, in the (so-called) music of the day the immorality & the unrighteousness of this ungodly world are being presented right out in the open. (They are parading it right down Main Street.) In the movies and on TV men & women both seem to seek just whatever partner they can find for the night. In the “music” women are being devalued and debased even to the point of being called prostitutes and female dogs. (Just listen to what your children and children are listening to.) We are seeing churches, God-called pastors, and believers attacked in the press amd on social media. Truly, just as Isaiah said evil is being called good, and good is being called evil - Isaiah 5:20 -- "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” The world is saying, “We have our own code of righteousness, but it is not the righteousness of the Bible.” They want to come up against our God. So let me ask this, “Are you ready to do the "impossible" & stand when this world brings it on?” With the exception of Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us more about David than any other person in Scripture, and it tells us a great deal about this event. The Philistines and the Israelites are battling by the valley of Elah. The Philistines had their champion. We know his name was Goliath. He stood over 9 feet tall and was a fierce warrior. His presence was so intimidating that all the Israelites’ warriors were cowering, and the Bible says they were literally fleeing from this giant. (Is this how we feel when we have to confront the world?) And for Israel, here was a young shepherd named David who was willing to go up against this almost 10 giant who had the armies of God terrified. The Philistines had their god, but David said, “That’s not God. But I am coming to you in the name of the true amd the living God.” “And, you’re not going to see what a boy with a sling can do.” “You’re about to see what a lad with God on his stones can do.” The key to doing “impossible” things for God and standing in “impossible” situations is found in four things we can note about David in these verses. They are:
I. DAVID DID THE "IMPOSSIBLE" IN EVERYDAY LIFE WHEN NO ONE WAS WATCHING -- VV. 32-37.
II. DAVID GOT OFFENDED FOR GOD - VV. 22-26.
III. DAVID WOULD NOT BE DETOURED BY CRITICISM OR HUMILIATION, VV. 28, 31-33.
IV. YOU HAVE TO GIVE GOD THE GLORY - VV. 47-50.
