Today let’s talk about possessions. No, I’m not going to extoll the virtues of a minimalist life because that would be hypocritical.
I own things that graced my grandma’s kitchen, my mother’s kitchen, and now my kitchen. My house is anything but minimalist, and yet it’s important to think about and talk about possessions.
When you look at something or pick it up, does it make your heart sing? If it does, then it belongs in your life. If it doesn’t, then it needs to be set free to make someone else’s heart sing.
So many of the things that I own – and maybe this is true for you, too – have stories that go back to my childhood. Yet sometimes, when I look at something, I realize that, while I love the story, I no longer feel the need to own the object.
You’ll always have the story – no one can take that away from you and you can conjure the story even when the object is no longer part of your life. When something doesn’t make your heart sing anymore, you owe it to the object and to those before you who loved it, to find someone else to love it.
