How do we answer His call?
Christians are called by God to be His disciples. As unique individuals, we differ in the way we answer His call. There are those who readily agree to do things and then never follow through. They make plans and cancel. They “flake” without a second thought. Is this how we respond to Christ’s call? Do we agree to volunteer then leave the work to others?
There are some people who are perpetual “fans”. They support and cheer on others without getting involved themselves. They sit on the sidelines. Is this how we respond to Christ’s call? Do we show up for Mass but let others become catechists or provide financial support?
Jesus is looking for “followers” — those who believe with their whole heart and do more than just talk. Followers make sacrifices, not excuses, and serve others before thinking of themselves. They proclaim the Kingdom of God by their actions. Is this how we respond to Christ’s call? Are we fully committed to our discipleship?
Being a true follower of Jesus is much harder than being a fan or a flake. There is sacrifice and discomfort. There is conflict and unpopularity. Yet this is the road Jesus asks us to travel—just as He asked the disciples in today’s gospel. Jesus committed His life to us, so we must fully commit our lives to Him.
