• The literal meaning of the word “Bethesda” is “House of Mercy.”
• Jesus is after people. The Son of man came to seek and save the lost. His compassion compels him. Jesus isn’t after crowds but individuals.
• Most of the time, people with issues are more interested in being accepted than changed. They want to be affirmed and comforted rather than changed. They want to be enabled and pitied rather than changed. But, here comes Jesus, and Jesus is in the transformation business. In the church, we need to make sure we aren’t creating cultures of enablement that allow disease to flourish and keeps people in sickness lying by the pool.
• We live in a world where people are truly having the life and hope sucked out of them because they no longer know their name or purpose, only their issue.
• John 5:6 - Jesus says, “Do you want to get well?” In other words, “Do you want to be healed? Do you want to be made whole?”
• Do you want the responsibility that comes with healing and wholeness? Are you willing to lose the label of the victim? Are you willing to give up your way of life? Are you willing to move on from a group of people or the culture that has surrounded you? Will you move from the familiar to the unfamiliar? DO YOU WANT TO BE HEALED? With healing, always comes responsibility.
• John 5:8 - Jesus said to the man, “Get up, pick up your mat and walk.” Immediately the man became well, and picked up his mat and began to walk.
• John 5:14 - “Afterward Jesus found the man in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not sin anymore, so that nothing worse happens to you.” The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.”
• The result of an encounter with God, is that power, truth, hope goes with you. Change happens. People are healed, set free, and made whole. What happens in this church is irrelevant and pointless, if it doesn’t change the world out there.
• Jesus is asking, “Does anyone want to be made whole?”
