Receiving the services that a student with dyslexia needs means dealing with the educational bureaucracy. This episode discusses the differences between a 504 Plan and an IEP and parental rights when advocating for an evaluation and services.

Working with students with dyslexia varies based on how early the intervention starts, and what accommodations may further assist the student to successfully go through the school year. These will be areas discussed in this episode.

After you have completed the child's personal and family history, it is important to do a comprehensive evaluation starting with understanding of phonemes (single sounds) and ending with ruling in or out other disorders that are imitating or co-existing with dyslexia.

Diagnosing dyslexia consists of taking a detailed history of child issues with language, developmental issues, prematurity, and head trauma, especially on the left side of the brain. It also requires a family history of members with language, reading, and/or writing struggles or avoidance. We will cover this and what to do if there are red flags.

In episode 7, we will cover the impacts dyslexia has outside of the academic setting. Since dyslexia is a language-based disorder, impacts effect how a person organizes their speech, how they remember longer conversations, and instructions. There can frequently be misunderstandings due to problems keeping information in the correct order. Individuals also don't want to read or write in front of others for fear of showing their deficits.

10-30% of children struggle with the written language process due to a neurodevelopmental disorder called dysgraphia (difficulty with writing). Students with dyslexia frequently also have dysgraphia. Many children have been labeled lazy as a reason for their messy handwriting. But it is not laziness! Listen to find out why it is so difficult.

Parents want to help their children. They feel helpless when they don't how. This was the way that the Docs for Dyslexia felt when their children struggled with reading and writing in school. Their children were diagnosed with dyslexia, which they felt would open doors to effective treatment. Unfortunately, they discovered that this disorder was not officially recognized by the educational system. They needed help to advocate for their children. This discovery led them to join together to increase awareness among healthcare providers for diagnosis, treatment, and advocacy.
