I've always felt that gameplay broke down fairly fast after achieving name level in AD&D 1e, as that is where casters fully come into their own, and fighting classes are still useful as more than meat shields. But how do you satisfy the urge of your players for higher-level spells and other abilities? Scrolls, of course!
