How much of your artist statement comes into play when you are making a pitch compared to a visual drawing?
It’s actually all important. It’s the artists statement, it all has equal bearing. The artist statement, the visuals, the budget, your timeline, your engagement with the community, all of those elements actually become part of your pitch.
What is a common mistake that first time applicants make when they are giving a pitch to a community?
I think it’s really important when you are going to a community you want to sit, listen, and learn before you actually speak.
How detailed does a proposal need to be?
It depends on the project. It depends on who’s applying for the funding. So if it’s a not for profit organization that wants you to do a public piece or a community program it’s really up to them to find funding for that project. They are doing that part of the process for you and you are just giving them your drawings, ideas, your CV, and your previous work.
How do you price your project or installations without feeling awkward?
Because I know how long they take me, so I also want to figure out how much the funding is before I come up with a final design. So the bigger the project, then you have to account for that financially.
What happens if a project goes over budget?
I don’t do that. I will set a project to a budget I feel comfortable with and I don’t care if it’s going to take me more or less time. If I feel like that’s fair, then that’s fair.
How much does a portfolio play into getting you new projects to work on?
I think the biggest play is actually the relationship that you have the person running the projects. Because from work you always get more work.
