Tokyo, Japan (CNN) -- The annual slaughter of bottlenose dolphins in an infamous Japanese cove has started and is expected to finish Tuesday, according to the local Taiji fishermen's union. The annual event is a focal point of the Taiji community's dolphin hunting season, which many in the community in southwest Japan view as a long-held tradition.

But the hunt is heavily scrutinized by environmental activists, who have been monitoring activities and tweeting about the latest developments.

신문에 따르면 정부 대변인인 스가 요시히데(菅義偉) 관방장관은 20일 기자회견에서 캐롤라인 케네디 주일 미국대사가 일본의 돌고래 포획 방식이 잔혹하다고 비판한 데 대해 "우리나라의 전통적인 낚시법의 하나로, 법령에 근거해 적절히 실시되고 있다"며 문제될 것이 없다는 입장을 밝혔다. 일본의 이 같은 돌고래 사냥은 미국 환경운동가들이 찍은 다큐멘터리 영화 '더 코브'(The Cove)를 통해 국제적으로도 널리 알려졌다.
