Donald E. Knuth is known around the world as the pre-eminent living scholar of computer science, the author of the comprehensive multi-volume work The Art of Computer Programming. Knuth has been called the "father" of the analysis of algorithms. In addition to fundamental contributions in several branches of theoretical computer science, Knuth is the creator of the TeX computer typesetting system, the related METAFONT font definition language and rendering system, and the Computer Modern family of typefaces. As a writer and scholar, Knuth created the WEB/CWEB computer programming systems designed to encourage and facilitate literate programming, and designed the MIX/MMIX instruction set architectures. In 1979, Donald Knuth received the National Medal of Science, the highest honor the United States bestows upon its greatest scientists. Donald Knuth's career has bridged the arts and sciences. In addition to his scientific accomplishments, he is a talented organist, composer and novelist. In this podcast, recorded at the Academy of Achievement's 1985 Summit in Denver, Colorado, he discusses the creative aspects of computer science. He urges the Academy's student delegates to broaden their horizons and hone their thinking through writing. Today, Donald Knuth is Professor Emeritus at Stanford University.
