My husband (Brian), who was only 59, was diagnosed with brain cancer on April 29th 2015. The shock and heartbreak of knowing that there was no cure for his type of cancer was beyond anything that I thought we could cope with as a couple. We decided that we were going to fight this disease and make sure that, while he was alive, his life sure that, while he was alive, his life would have laughter, love and the company of close friends and family. We were told that his diagnosis with treatment would give us up to 18 months.
I went from being his wife to becoming a full time caregiver.  I was determined that I would be the best person to provide him with everything he needed and allow him to die at home. I could not have imagined how exhaustive and difficult this could be even with the support of friends and neighbours.
In July of 2016, Brian’s disease progressed and we were told that the chemotherapy treatments were no longer working. It was suggested that Brian go to Hospice. I was against this, not knowing exactly what
Hospice was all about but thinking that no one could look after him like I could. However, it became evident that I could no longer give Brian the best care.
I decided to go to the Hospice Simcoe website to see what it was all about. To my surprise and relief I saw a house that looked like a home. I found out that all of the support and care that he would need would be provided and that I would still be a participant in his care.
When we got there I was amazed at how warm and welcoming this home was. I was able to stay with Brian and continue as we did at home only now I could be his wife and partner instead of his caregiver. I can’t tell you how much I cherished the last 7 days with Brian because of Hospice. They provided and embraced everything that a family could need for support over this time.
We were able to have family and friends visit, I could stay by his side at night, and we were able to have our little dog with us. Our time together was a blessing. My life changed forever when Brian passed.
