Matthew 23:1-39
In this chapter, Jesus addresses the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees. He points out how they would preach one thing and then do the opposite, or engage in activities solely for self-indulgence. They sought admiration from the public, wanting to sit in high positions at banquets and occupy the chief seats in the synagogues. They pretended to be devout by making lengthy prayers at widow's houses.
