KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Usually, all entrepreneurs know what it means to be the bottleneck in their business. In the first few years of starting a business all the decision making is tied around you. At some point that business model is not sustainable because you’ll get completely overwhelmed, you won’t delegate enough, and this is where you become a bottleneck. You and your business are stuck and not moving as fast as you’d like to.
  • The first thing I do is sit down with entrepreneurs and ask them to tell me what’s going on. I don’t usually have a lot of experience in their business areas/industries, so I ask a lot of questions. During that process I ask why they did this and that and about how they’re feeling. Once we reach there and I have a full picture I explore what it is they want to achieve and what changes they’d like to see happen? We then select the best option and the most important step in any coaching conversation is to make a plan of action.
  • There are a lot of examples of companies where, when the leadership is in difficulty, and the leaders are completely transparent about it, the staff will actually gather around the leaders and will work harder to keep the ship afloat. They may lack motivation and this is where leadership is really important, something needs to be done by the leader of the company to address the issues. They need to know that there is a captain and someone know what’s going to happen, even if that is: “I don’t know if everyone is going to keep their job, but I can guarantee that in the next three months I will do whatever it takes to ensure the maximum number of people keep their job, are you with me or not?”
  • Over my years running companies I really enjoyed the interaction that I had with staff, especially training, coaching and mentoring them. When I see the sparkle in their eyes when they understand something or they have a breakthrough, that’s a big reward for me. When I reached the age of 40 I figured if I don’t do something for myself I will never do it, so I thought about what I really like to do, what makes me me, and I became a coach for entrepreneurs because I speak their language.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Being an entrepreneur starts in your head. It’s all about mindset. When, in your head, it’s not going well you become the bottleneck.’
‘Unlike a lot of coaches who just ask questions, I ask questions but also provide guidance. I have a little bit of experience running businesses that I can use, as well as interviewing successful entrepreneurs every week on my podcast.’
‘A big problem for entrepreneurs is keeping a balance between work and private life, that’s another way they become the bottleneck; they work too much and they burn out and they can’t make decisions any more.’
‘If you don’t take care of yourself first, there is no way that you can take care of others or your business.’

ABOUT THE HOST
Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.
Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.
