#001. I was a caregiver for my father who had Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and I’m currently a caregiver for my mother with Alzheimer’s. Divorced and living in two different states, they were both diagnosed in 2017, but showed cognitive memory issues years prior. In that same year I moved my Dad into an apartment closer to me, literally 5 blocks away. Within a year I needed to hire professional help to take care of him as I divided my time between two households and working a full-time job. Some of it is still a blur, but the arrival of my brother in 2019 was pivotal as we both focused on making sure both Mom and Dad were safe and comfortable. Dad died November of 2019. This year I went part-time at my job to give Mom more focused attention and in return, pay more attention to my physical and mental health as we walk this journey together. I asked my friend and co-worker, Ashley King, to sit with me to help tell just part of my story.
