"Doo Wop Today" and Friends

For this blog, Jersey Phil will be interviewing Jim Bakay of the Streetcorner Five. Jim is also a DJ for WRDV Radio, in the Philadelphia area. We will be talking to Jim about his group, the status of doo wop in general, and we will also be playing a few SC5 tunes, just to get you hooked on this incredible group. Smitty joins us once again, fresh from his performance in Philly at the TLA. Before he sang with Quiet Storm, Smitty was a member of "The Informers". You will hear several Informers tunes, and Smitty's discussion about those days before Quiet Storm. Get ready to hear some more fantastic QS cuts as well.

This week we will feature the music of Philadelphia's great R&B, soul, and doo wop group known as "Quiet Storm". We are hoping that the groups founder Kamau "Smitty" Akiba will call in during the show. Wait till you hear the QS version of "Silhouettes".

Sackie,Southern Flyer and Jersey Phil will be joined by William Dell, lead singer of the Wee Jams from Pittsburgh, PA. The focus will be on the emergence of East Coast Beach Music as an important music genre and the relationship of Beach Music to Doo Wop.

This week we will feature the life and times and music of Bronx native Freddie Papst (also) known as "Sackie". How did Freddie get this nickname?? Tune into our show and find out. You will also hear 10 tunes that have been selected from Sackie's library of music from the various groups he has performed with over the years, such as Cherished Memories, Harmony Knights, and Sentimental Journey.

This week's "Doo Wop Today" show kicks off its new 1 hour format with the popular singer, songwriter, and longterm DJ for the "Doo Wop Cafe", Jack Strong, from Philadelphia, Pa. Jack sang with several groups, including The Contenders (The Clock), The Kaptions (Dreaming Of You), and The Lytations (Look Into The Sky).

This week we will focus on the music of Fred Papst (AKA Sackie). Fred has performed with many groups over the years. We have selected 6 or 7 tunes to be played (depending on time) that Fred has performed on-either as lead or as a back-up singer. Fred will be available to discuss these tunes and the groups that performed them and also present us with some of the background information associated with their production.
