DP13 Backup, Backup, Backup!

Backup, backup, backup

This is the top and biggest recommendation I give to everyone, individuals and organizations. It's critical.

You need to have more than one backup method in place. Multiple backups because Murphy's Law will hit when you need to restore from a backup, there will be all sorts of reasons that it won't work. Maybe the backups stopped, you didn't notice they weren't backing up the correct files, they are corrupted, you don't have the software to restore, etc

There are many reasons backups fail and that's why I recommend you put in multiple methods. Some automated and some manual. Some running in the background. Some going to cloud services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud... there are so many different solutions available. Ensure that a copy of your files is getting offsite to another location.

Sometimes you don't notice when files are corrupted and the backups simply copy the corrupted files now, or files were deleted and you didn't notice right away. Some backup programs make an exact copy of your files, even if they are deleted or corrupted.

Another big issue is Ransomware and having an offsite full copy of your backups can help. I have seen where some organizations have automated offsite backups that also get infected by the Ransomware. You want to have a snapshot of your data that is not live. It is on an external USB drive or member stick, which are very inexpensive. You still want to have automated backups because this helps avoid the human factor.

One site I recommend is Backblaze which has a very inexpensive unlimited backup option. The very first backup you run will likely take weeks to seed, but then it will only need to backup any changes.

Backups are something that I am very passionate about, making sure you're performing proper backups and you reviewed to verify they are working, and you have multiple backups in place to mitigate any risks. Don't depend on a single solution.
