Welcome to a new and improved episode of Peplau’s Ghost! The podcast by PMHNPs for Everyone. In this episode we discuss the state of psychotherapy as reviewed by Dr Barbara Peterson. Dr Peterson is a Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota. She is also the director of DEI and program coordinator for the PMHNP program at the University of Minnesota. She was selected to be a Fellow in the National Academy of Practice (FNAP) which celebrates interprofessional practice in 2021. She is the current president of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN). She has also numerous publications and federally funded grants that highlight her expertise in caring for children and adolescents with mental illness and trauma. While she is not currently in practice, Dr. Peterson shares her decades of experience in caring for children who have suffered multiple traumatic events. She reviews how she connects with each and how she works to help them overcome these experiences. Dr Peterson also shares her perspective of where the role of psychotherapy has been and where it is going. Seeing more and more of her students graduating and advocating for themselves and preserving the use of psychotherapy within the role. We also discuss the potential pitfalls of doing psychotherapy and discuss the concept of Johari Windows in understanding that some people doing therapy can fall in traps of their own design. By the end I could hear Dr Peterson’s Minnesota accent, and it seems like everyone learned something and got reinvigorated.
