Are Jews still safe in Britain β€” and why has that question become so controversial to ask? In this episode of Heretics, I’m joined by Dr Daniel Allington, a scholar and commentator, to examine his analysis of rising antisemitism in the UK and why research into its sources is increasingly resisted within academia and public institutions.

Dr Allington explains that antisemitism in Britain cannot be understood through a single lens. Drawing on academic studies, surveys, and case analysis, he argues that while far-right antisemitism exists, other sources are often under-examined because they are politically sensitive. According to Allington, this reluctance to investigate all drivers of antisemitic hostility has serious consequences for Jewish communities β€” particularly when evidence points in uncomfortable directions. These are his conclusions, grounded in research and interpretation of available data.

The conversation explores how universities and cultural institutions have become cautious about research that complicates dominant narratives. Dr Allington describes how studies addressing antisemitic attitudes linked to political Islam or religiously framed hostility can face resistance, delay, or dismissal β€” even when methodology is rigorous. He explains why scholars who pursue these questions may risk professional isolation, reputational damage, or informal pressure to change focus.

Importantly, this episode makes clear distinctions. It does not target people or communities. Dr Allington stresses the difference between Islam as a faith, which encompasses diverse beliefs and practices, and ideological or doctrinal antisemitism, which must be confronted wherever it appears. The issue, he argues, is not identity β€” it’s ideas, and whether institutions are willing to examine them honestly.

We also discuss the real-world implications. When antisemitism is misdiagnosed or selectively analysed, policy responses fail. Security measures become reactive rather than preventative, and Jewish communities are left feeling unheard. Dr Allington asks why acknowledging patterns has become more taboo than the harm those patterns cause.

The episode widens to a broader question: what happens to minority safety when evidence is filtered through ideology? Dr Allington argues that suppressing research does not protect social cohesion β€” it undermines trust and leaves problems to fester in silence.

You don’t have to agree with every conclusion Dr Allington reaches to find this conversation essential. Its value lies in confronting whether Britain can protect its Jewish population without first being honest about where antisemitism is coming from β€” and why asking that question now carries such risk.

If you care about evidence-based policy, academic freedom, and the safety of minority communities, this is a conversation you need to hear.
