February 7, 2025 ~ Lucy Ann Lance talks with Dr. Gina Lynem Walker, Medical Director of Utilization Management at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Dr. Lynem Walker highlights that over 600,000 Americans receive treatment for burns annually, with more than 60% occurring at home. The primary causes are thermal burns from smoking and open flames, including hot liquids, metals, and steam. Burns are classified into three degrees: first-degree burns affect only the outer skin and can be treated with cool water; second-degree burns penetrate deeper and may blister, requiring careful management to prevent infection; third-degree burns are severe and necessitate immediate medical care, potential skin grafting, and hospitalization.
