Dr Jeff Waage joins us on the podcast for an early morning stroll around Hampstead Heath in London to hear the dawn chorus.

An ecologist by trade and bird watcher, Jeff helps host Dan Carrier listen out for and spot an array of bird species from woodpeckers to jackdaws, blackcaps to wood warblers. 

Along the way, they meet Alan who has been venturing around this slice of countryside inside the sprawling metropolis for over 60 years and was on his way to feed the crows he has befriended.

Dr Waage, a member of the Heath and Hampstead Society, has led a project to monitor the numbers of nesting birds and hopes to use the figures to suggest new ways to protect wildlife.
