In this episode, host Rob Hlavaty meets with clinical psychologist and survivor of suicide loss, Dr. Jennifer Howell.
I do want to provide a trigger warning for this episode. Jenn and I get into some of the more graphic details that surround losing a loved one to suicide, including the specific methods that were used by her mother, as well as my dad. Some of this conversation could certainly be challenging for someone who has lost a loved one in a similar way.
Dr. Howell discusses what it was like losing her mom to suicide when she was only 13 years old, how being a motherless daughter has impacted her life and her view on motherhood, the conversations we’re used to having as survivors of suicide loss, the anger that comes along with losing a loved one to suicide, and finally, we talk about evidence-based therapy protocols, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and how they could benefit someone who has been impacted by suicide.
