Dr Joe Smith is the Chief Medical & Science Officer at the West Health Institute and President of The West Health Policy Center. Originally trained in Medical Engineering and Physics he then pursued his MD training at Harvard. After 20 years as a practicing Electrophysiologist he became Chief Medical Officer for Guidant and Boston Scientific's Cardiac Rhythm Management Division. Named as one of the "Twenty People Who Make Healthcare Better' he also serves as faculty advisor to the University of Southern California, Johns Hopkins, Harvard & MIT and The Wellcome Trust. In this discussion we delve deep into the motivations to pursue a career in medicine, how the arc of your career can take many paths and the skills that physicians are valued most for in roles outside of traditional clinical care.
