Description:

Imagine you grew up in a country with a population of only 20 million people. A country where there was only one accredited medical university, a country with 1 physician for every 10,000 people, a country where only 1% of the population has health insurance. Well welcome to childhood of today’s Guest, Dr. Nina Lum. What would you do if you wanted to go into medicine? Committed to reshaping her future, Nina left Cameroon, completed medical school in the Caribbean and through hard work, dedication, and persistence, was accepted into a US residency program. Having lived in the US only for a short time during the clinical years of medical school, Nina found herself navigating the US medical system preparing for residency. Today I couldn’t be more excited to bring you an interview with Dr. Lum, here to talk about her path to medicine and to introduce the book “The Chronicles of Women in White Coats” which Dr. Lum Co-authored with 19 other women physicians. Dr. Lum authored 2 of the 30 chapters and links to the book can be found in our show notes. Link in our Bio. In this episode, we dive deep discussing her path to medicine, how we can overcome the inherent biases we have, what it means to struggle and persevere, and we discuss several of the stories in the book about how women in medicine balance 80hr work weeks, raising kids, supporting the family, and so much more.
