A late-night drive. A snow-covered road. Something moving just beyond the headlights...

"Heart pounding, he exhaled a shaky breath and forced himself to look left, then right. Nothing. No headlights, no shapes, nothing at all. Who else would be out here on a night like this? He was about to move off when something caught his eye—a flicker of movement in the field opposite...A dark shape, large, powerful, tearing across the snow. He couldn’t tell what it was, only that it moved fast, until it vanished into the swirling snow and the ink-black night beyond.

‘What the hell…?’ Riley muttered. He rubbed condensation from the windscreen, but it made no difference. Muttering a curse, he shoved the door open and stood half in, half out, peering across the hedgerow. The night pressed close, thick with falling snow.
