Listen Later

Your kid spent two hours on educational YouTube and couldn't answer "what do you want to do now?" That restlessness isn't a character flaw, it's data. The screen time debate asked the wrong question. The right one: who is doing the cognitive work: your child, or the environment?

This episode draws in part on research in:

  • Screen time displacement: heavy device use consistently linked to reduced sleep and physical activity in children and adolescents (Cain & Gradisar, 2010; Twenge et al., 2017)
  • Screen time effects: context and what screen time displaces matter more than duration alone (Orben & Przybylski, 2019)
  • Executive function development and the trainable nature of self-directed attention (Diamond, 2013)
  • Self-regulation in childhood as a predictor of outcomes across academic, social, and health domains (Moffitt et al., 2011)
  • Smartphone presence and reduced available cognitive capacity (Ward, Duke, Gneezy & Bos, 2017)
  • Self-regulated learning as a developmental skill requiring intentional practice conditions (Zimmerman, 2002)
