Driven Too Far
J. T. Craig, the pen name of the writing team of John Teubner and Craig Laughlin, prove that they're as adept at writing slightly longer fiction as they are at their usual short short stories in the aptly named, "Driven," a novelette about stalking and obsession with a most unusual target. Here, instead of an imagined loved one or a celebrity, the object of affection for the main character is one that positively can't return his love... a 1967 Chevy Corvette.
"Driven" is a story about Sean, a seemingly ordinary steel mill worker whose one passion in his life is his Corvette. The car was a pile of junk when Sean bought it years earlier, but he lovingly restored to brand new shape, and he now spends every free minute working on the car. However, when Sean loses his job, his wife Francine sells the car to Chad, a rich guy who, in Sean's opinion, has no appreciation for the Corvette but, instead, just wants a new toy to play with for a while. Sean's suspicions are confirmed in his mind when he sees that Chad has no intention of taking care of the car, and he determines that Chad isn't worthy of owning the car.
Sean becomes obsessed with the car, to the extent of attaching a tracking device on the car to see where Chad parks it (too close to other cars in a parking lot so that it's likely to get hit) and winds up in a confrontation with Chad's wife. In response, Chad gets a restraining order against Sean, who ignores it and continues to contrive increasingly outlandish ways to "happen by" where the car is located. However, when Sean's father-in-law eventually finds work for him in another state, he realizes he won't be able to keep tabs on the Corvette any more, leading to a most unusual finale.
"Driven" is a subtly written story, beginning as a somewhat comical tale but gradually getting more serious as readers slowly realize that Sean isn't just a guy unwilling to part with a prized possession but someone dangerously unbalanced. The story is told from his perspective, so readers are privy to his thought processes as he convinces himself that Chad and his family don't deserve the car. The authors even stack the deck somewhat to give Sean a bit of justification for his initial concern. Chad and his family are crude, boorish, materialistic, and insensitive (in fact, the story overdoes their callous disregard for the car a little bit)... definitely not the type of people who in many readers' minds should be taking a working man's only valued possession away.
The key to the story, of course is that Sean goes way over the line. Even if, on some level, Chad isn't the type of guy who should be given the keys to a 67 Corvette, he's also not the type of guy who deserves having Sean follow him to a weekend getaway spot to "accidentally" run into him.
