At least in North America, driver's licenses are a seeming rite of passage and something one simply has. Consider the default ask for identification in North America is, "Can I see your driver's license?" despite passports, identification cards that don't permit driving, and other such credentials are perfectly valid and legal for those places (eg. age-restricted locations and purchases).
