Driving Weather Spain: Navigating the Summer Heatwave Safely

Listen Later

With temperatures set to soar across Spain this week, drivers can expect a period of hot and dry conditions. This will bring about the potential for very high road surface temperatures, which can affect tyre performance and lead to a heightened risk of blowouts.

The lack of rain and high temperatures also bring an increased risk of wild fires, particularly in inland and forested areas. Drivers are urged to be extremely cautious and to ensure all litter, especially smoking paraphernalia, is disposed of responsibly and not from a moving vehicle.

This Week

The start of the week, from Monday to Tuesday, will be dominated by clear skies and high temperatures across the country.

Road conditions will be excellent, but the heat will be a significant factor. Be sure to check your vehicle’s fluids, especially coolant levels, and ensure your tyres are correctly inflated to handle the heat.

As the week progresses into Wednesday and Thursday, the heatwave will continue with very little change. Winds are expected to remain light, but localised stronger gusts could develop, particularly in coastal areas. Give high-sided vehicles and caravans plenty of space, and be extra careful if you’re overtaking them.

Towards the end of the week, on Friday, the heat will persist. With many people starting their weekend getaways, expect an increase in traffic volume, especially on motorways and around major cities. Patience will be key to avoiding problems and accidents.

The Weekend

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be a continuation of the hot, dry weather.

With many people travelling for leisure, roads are likely to be busy. Drivers should be prepared for potential congestion and plan their journeys to avoid peak times.

The risk of wild fires remains a major concern, so please be vigilant and report any smoke or fires you see to the emergency services immediately.

Stay hydrated, take regular breaks, and never leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults in a parked car, even for a short time.

Next Week

Next week looks set to see a slight easing of the extreme temperatures, but the overall pattern of hot and dry conditions is expected to continue. There are no significant weather events on the horizon, but the ongoing heat means drivers must remain vigilant about vehicle maintenance and road safety.
