They never questioned why they supported the Democratic party. Often it was based solely on their race rather than specific policies of the Democratic party. They were often unaware of the Democrat party's history and its current policies on a range of issues. They found that most of the Democratic party's history and most of its current policies conflict with their own values and beliefs - especially their Christian beliefs. The (D) Democrat party supported slavery from its founding in 1828.

The (R) Republican party was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery.
