The desert planet Arrakis is the source of the universe's most valuable resource called "spice" that allows users to travel vast distances. Spice mining is controlled by the evil Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard), whose armies oppress the planet's Fremen people. Under an imperial decree from the Emperor, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) takes over the stewardship of Arrakis and moves there with his wife, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and son, Paul (Timothee Chalamet). Once on Arrakis, the Freman begin to suspect that Paul may be a prophesied "chosen one."
Dune is undeniably staggering in its beauty. However, for viewers not familiar with the source material or David Lynch's 1984 film, they may find themselves slightly bored and scratching their heads trying to figure out how the pieces fit together. Dune is an immersive, but incomplete experience. Still, the film duly whets your appetite for a part two.
