Dutch oven cooking is making a comeback. This time-tested method of cooking used to be popular out of necessity. Requiring no electricity and very little additional equipment, chuck wagon style cooking kept people alive in the back country and when exploring the West for years. Even if you have other methods to cook with, Dutch oven cooking is convenient, economical and a great way to feed large groups of people. It’s also a great tool to have in the emergency preparedness kit. There have been several occasions when our power has gone out and it only took a few minutes to set up an outdoor kitchen on the back porch with a few Dutch ovens. From main dishes to desserts to one-pot breakfasts, just about anything can be cooked in or on a Dutch oven.
