The President of General Motors export arm, James Mooney, stood in his hotel room practising his Nazi salute in front of the mirror. Should his sieg heil show

enthusiasm or maybe solemn obedience? Too late for any more practice, it was the afternoon of 1 May 1934. Time to meet Hitler - as his special guest at the giant May Day Parade. General Motors World, the General Motor Corporation’s company in-house paper, enthusiastically covered this momentous May Day event in a glowing multi-page cover story, and it published another story which read "Hitler is a strong man, well fitted to lead the German people out of their former economic distress. ... He is leading them, not by force or fear, but by intelligent planning and execution of fundamentally sound principles of government.".
