January 17 in Hawaiʻi serves as a solemn day for reflection on the illegal overthrow and a call for moral revolution for a better future. January 17 marks Hawaiʻiʻs monarchy being overthrown.  Beyond the businessmen proclaiming a provisional government with the support of the U.S. Boston and Queen Liliʻuokalani preventing bloodshed being forced to abdicate her thrown temporarily, January 17 reminds us of the past atrocities but also the necessity for the nation of Hawaiʻi to be honored and respected.  On the 130th commemoration, the people call for a path of peace, truth and reconciliation rooted in human rights for all beginning with Kanaka Maoli.
