On February 12, 2026, an e-scooter battery failed inside a residential garage in Bixby, Oklahoma — and the result wasn’t just a fire. It was an explosion strong enough to blow the garage door out of its tracks.
Lithium-ion batteries can vent large volumes of flammable gases during thermal runaway. If those gases accumulate in a confined space before ignition, the result can be a deflagration — a pressure event capable of damaging structures.
