E03 Psychologist Alice Miller : Childhood abuse

Listen Later

We’ll examine this quote from pioneering psychoanalyst Alice Miller:
"Adults who experienced violence in childhood and whose integrity was fundamentally violated learn to adapt to the abusive situation by repressing their reactions or dissociating – that is, disconnecting the conscious from the unconscious mind."
Miller’s profound observation explains how ongoing childhood maltreatment forces victims to detach from natural emotions as an unconscious defense. This estrangement from their true wounded selves persists in self-destructive patterns throughout adulthood.
On this edition, we’ll explore how childhood abuse shaped two legendary Viking heroes - sworn enemies Thorfinn and Thorkell from the epic manga Vinland Saga. Their tragic lives illustrate the lasting impact of trauma inflicted when young and vulnerable.
Both Thorfinn and Thorkell exemplify this tragic adaptation to abuse. Hardened by battle and his harsh father Thors, young Thorfinn learned to hide vulnerability behind a stoic warrior facade. But repressed underneath was extreme anguish from missing parental love. This engendered his vengeful obsession with slaying Askeladd after Thors’ murder. His quest for violent justice unconsciously sought to heal childhood wounds denied outlet.
Similarly, having only known daily degradation, Thorkell adapted through total dissociation from feeling and consciousness of his abuse. This left him an enraged hollow vessel compulsively fighting to stimulate his numb psyche. Beneath his bravado lay the estranged ghost of the brutalized boy he once was.
Their lives illustrate childhood trauma’s crushing legacy when left unprocessed. But Miller offers hope that by courageously reconnecting with suppressed pain, redemption and integration become possible. On this episode, we’ll see how Thorfinn's journey reflects this struggle to consciously transform his demons into wisdom.
