E10 Unmasking Emotional Abuse: Healing the Invisible Wounds

Listen Later

Emotional abuse is a form of maltreatment characterized by the consistent infliction of emotional harm or distress upon an individual. It involves patterns of behavior aimed at undermining a person’s sense of self-worth, dignity, or emotional well-being. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse doesn’t leave visible scars but can deeply affect a person’s mental health and emotional stability.
It can manifest in various ways, such as constant criticism, belittling, humiliation, gaslighting (manipulation to make someone doubt their perception or reality), controlling behavior, threats, and isolation. This type of abuse often occurs within personal relationships, such as between partners, parents and children, or in a caregiver’s relationship.
Victims of emotional abuse may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulties forming healthy relationships. Identifying emotional abuse can be challenging, as it often happens gradually and subtly, making it harder for the victim to recognize the harmful behavior.
It’s essential to raise awareness about emotional abuse, acknowledge its impact, and provide support and resources for those who have experienced or are experiencing this form of mistreatment.
