E102: Three Things - Why You Need to STOP Giving 110% If You Want to Achieve Your Dreams

Listen Later

On this episode of Flow Over Fear, Adam shares three reasons we need to stop giving our all all the time. The three reasons he gives are…

  1. You burn out

  2. You begin to doubt your abilities

  3. You fail to achieve your true potential

  4. But Adam doesn’t stop at just identifying the pitfalls of giving too much of ourselves, he provides the solution to each, because awareness is just the first step to transformation. One of the key ways in which we can make that progress consistently, and improve our confidence and reach higher levels of our potential?

Stop giving 110% and instead, give 80% consistently.

This 80% gives us the capacity to rest, recover, ideate, play, become creative. And over time, with consistency, our 80% becomes everyone else’s 110%.

Our capacity to think, rest, recover, rejuvenate, and rebuild is just as important as taking consistent action, and therefore 80% is the sweet spot. Taking time and giving ourselves space to think and dream does not neglect our aspirations; in fact, it allows us to dream bigger and pursue those dreams consistently.

We discover that giving ourselves the capacity to grow is essential for sustainable progress. In this episode, Adam acknowledges that giving only 80% may feel counterintuitive and uncomfortable, but it is necessary to know when to stop and say "that's enough." He explains the idea that achieving amazing results doesn't always require pushing ourselves to the limit. Consistent effort at 80% can lead to long-term success, whereas continuously pushing ourselves can lead to burnout, complacency, doubt, and demoralization. And  that true potential is reached when we give ourselves space to breathe and consider what's next.

Expanding our vision and reach, finding the right people to surround ourselves with, and building relationships become essential in our pursuit of greatness. He explains how enjoying life and having adventures are where we create abundance.

This episode challenges the belief that working hard and giving 110% is always a good work ethic. Adam discusses the importance of not sacrificing our true potential by constantly pushing ourselves. Being a visionary and achieving greatness require giving ourselves time and capacity for visualization. He debunks the misconception of progress being linear and emphasizes the significance of rest and deliberate planning for continued growth. Reflecting on our accomplishments, both big and small, can help overcome self-doubt and keep us motivated. Staying disciplined and consistent in pursuing our dreams is key, and the 80% rule is mentioned as a way to prioritize self-care and avoid burnout.
