On this episode of the podcast Cody chats with Darren Ollinger who is the front man for the YYC punk rock band Julius Sumner Miller. The two of them take a deep dive into the bands new record Try It Out and discuss the outrageous prices of parmesan cheese. They also talk about a wide variety of other subject matter including: how it’s one thing to write a record and how its another thing to write a record that people want to listen to over and over again, writing songs for the back of the room as well as the front, the advantages and disadvantages of different recording styles, cliches are cliches for a reason, what its like releasing an album in the middle of a pandemic, the importance of taking the time to interact with your fans, being forced to slow down because of the pandemic and the gratitude that comes with that, coming up with creative ways to connect with your audience, the opportunities that the pandemic has given us, things that we started doing because of the pandemic and that we plan to continue doing after its over, creating a sound that is unique to your band, making the art that you want to make and not pandering to anyone, how there’s no write or wrong way to do things, and at the end of the day nobody really cares. You can listen to the song Frugal Man off of the bands most recent album at the end of the episode.
