A Romanian-native, Petru Trimbitas started learning how to code back in 9th grade. Eventually, he realized the fasted way to have his own gaming system was becoming a programmer. Recognizing the struggle of finding mentors, he now helps others find success in coding faster than he did.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
Episode Highlights:
How to Find Mentors
We all think we need to do things ourselves. But you need to learn from other people's mistakes and experiences, or you can waste time figuring it out yourself. It's a lot faster to learn from others and having mentors. You can find mentors just by reading books or listening to podcasts. Surround yourself with people smarter than you are. And don't be afraid to ask for help from an expert.
How to Get Started with Coding as a Career-Switcher
A lot of people fall into the trap of copy-pasting code from the internet. They take the code, run the code on their local computers, and it works. But the problem here is that you don't understand why it works. And whenever you want to create something from scratch, you feel stuck.
Petru helps people learn how to code, especially those who feel the need to switch careers. Through their platform, they teach them how to code and take from being complete beginners to getting hired as software engineers. They coded the platform themselves in a way that everyone can learn how to code in their own rhythm. Their platform automatically grades students as part of their main focus is to provide ample support.
A lot of people have this false belief that you need to go for four years in college, especially in the U.S. where the tuitions are so high. But its only big advantage is the network. Apart from that, it takes more time and you don't get that much support. So if you want to switch careers, you're interested in changing as fast as possible. So you want to learn the fastest way possible to a point where you're paid for writing code.
How to Know You Could Be Good at Coding
When you have a very strong purpose, even when you’re not smart enough for doing it, coding is learnable. You just need to spend time and do the right steps in order to improve your way of thinking. It's like learning your first language. It's the same with coding. You just need to have the right teachers and spend the time doing it. Whoever can invest 15 hours a week in learning can become a successful programmer.
