I can be pretty clumsy at times, especially early in the morning. Over the past couple days, I have repeatedly knocked my hairbrush off of my sink while beginning my morning routine. As frustrating as it is to experience a little pain in the morning, I knew there was a lesson to be learned that I could share with you.
Inside this episode, I describe how something as trivial as a dropped hairbrush taught me about:
I started off this morning with my normal morning routine. As I went into the bathroom to shave and brush my teeth, I knocked my hairbrush off the sink counter for the second day in a row. Yesterday when I knocked it off, I had experienced enough pain to really wake me up for the day! Today (because I had experienced that pain the day prior) I moved my foot. And that insignificant start to my day opened my eyes to an amazing life lesson WITH an action step!
I immediately became aware the lack of control that we feel when something is in motion (falling hairbrush) does NOT prevent us from taking action, (moving the foot).
As I began to apply this to other areas of my life, I began to think of when I would want to put my foot in the way; maybe to protect a falling object instead of avoiding it. The first thing that came to my mind (and probably yours) was my cell phone!
This insight led me to think about the habits that we establish in our lives to protect the things we love, including ourselves. But those protective habits aren't always productive habits. They may actually cause us to lose mindfulness and care. It's the crux of safety and security. I never want to be so safe and so secure that I don't get to experience life. Yet, this is what I was doing with my phone.
When you strip away the protective cover, you might be surprised by how much mindfulness you sacrifice on a daily basis.
