The Roller Coaster of Midlife

E142 – In Reverse with Lois Letchford

Listen Later

I’ll never forget the day that we sat in the psychologist's office to hear the results of 8 hours of testing with our son Ethan. He was just starting grade 2 but we had known since Junior Kindergarten that something wasn’t clicking when it came to letters and numbers. What we didn’t realize was the severity of his challenges. My heart sank when the doctor told us he had dyslexia and was in the Second percentile, basically, take 100 kids with varying degrees of dyslexia and 98 had it better than him. We were painted a grim picture. But what we learned over the following 10 years was that dyslexia isn’t a disability but rather unique ability.

Joining me today is Lois Letchford, who has also struggled with dyslexia, and she also learned to use it as her strength. Now, Lois is a literacy spokesperson for struggling learners who have fallen behind in the traditional classroom.
