Confessions of a CRA

E15: From Lab Tech to Study Coordinator to CRA to VP: Interview with Karen Correa Part 1

Listen Later

Dr. Correa shares her journey of how she originally had the med school idea like so many of us clinical researchers but realized that was not for her and started her journey in the lab, doing bench science. She then went on to be a Study Coordinator, CRA, CRA Manager, CTM, Associate Director, and now Vice President of a major Pharma company. Dr. Correa talks about how having great leaders in all her roles really helped her grow and develop her career as a young woman. She also discusses how you can identify when it’s time to leave a company (even if you love it there) and how she was able to land a job, even though she was an hour and a half late.

Here are a few key takeaways from this episode that Dr. Correa shares about career growth:

  • Ask questions
  • Surround yourself with great leaders and mentors
  • You have to dress for your next position
  • Don’t just get mentors, get sponsors – people who are talking about you when you’re not in the room; they know what you can do and what you can deliver
  • Success doesn’t happen overnight
  • Never burn a bridge you might need to cross again
  • Make sure you have a well put together resume that grabs the reader’s attention and showcases your diversity
