*The poem is below, if you cannot understand my very very eloquent voice.
2020
The year I turned 20 from 19.
Oh Thank God that I’m not 19.
Because you know COVID-19.
It never occurred to me how hopeless I could be
While I am at home watching Netflix, 83.6 million are fighting for their lives just to be fixed.
And 1.82 million R I P.
The year of Covid-19.
2020
How redundant
How many times will we hear the same thing
How many times do we need to scream BLM,
And be given no lives matter.
How many times does a black have to die,
For a white to realize.
That “I have a dream..” was not meant to stay a dream
And Thank God for social media.
Because if a tree falls in the middle of a forest
And nobody is around, Does it make a sound?
We all dream and scream black lives matter
Because… black lives matter .Period.
The year of racial injustice.
How many more times will we hear 2020?
2020
Kobe Bryant
Gianna Bryant
Chadwick Boseman
John Lewis
Ruth Ginsburg
And almost Kim Jung Un. Dang it.
The year of death
2020
A lot of us sad and lonely
A lot of us alone in our rooms, only wishing to be asked “How are you doing?”
A lot of us in pain; Friends lost, relationships faded.
Break ups, and make ups
Breakdowns, and breakthroughs
Sick and healed.
OH wait I’m sorry it’s 2020
Just Break ups, breakdowns, and sick
S.A.D, S.A.D, S.A.D
Seasonal affective disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder
Sad, sad, sad
The year of mental health
A lot of us wish 2020 to pass
But now GOOD NEWS it is 2021!
So…
2021
The year I go from 20 to 21.
The year we are no longer redundant
The year we grow up by at least one. 20 to 21
The year I can legally get lit and turned up
But honestly I am praying that 2021 will be a year we can
Stand up, lift up, and give up all that we have to make 2021 better than the last one.
Have our breaks ups, make up
Breakdowns turn into breakthroughs
The sick be healed.
Thank God and be with us in 2021.
Oh and lastly
2020
Screw you.
