E51: Measure What Matters by John Doerr [Book Analysis]

Listen Later

This week we dive into a book analysis of Measure What Matters by John Doerr. Many of us have heard of SMART goals, but what about OKRs? (Objectives and Key Results).

TOPICS:

  • Google implementation and success with OKRs
  • Intel model for success
  • Objectives = vision/inspirational
  • Key Results = Milestone
  • Goals should be public + clear to get buy-in, Everyone working in same direction
  • OKR’s behind all billion dollar products:

Google Search, chrome, android, maps, youtube, google play, and gmail

OKRs Create = focus/commitment to product, teamwork, accountability, stretch better than animal performance revents, instill continuous improvements, importance of culture

    How to Create Effective OKRs

    • Crush the purpose for a task (make it overly clear)
    • Setting goals for the next 6-12 months, setting goals is important (non action or nondecisions leads to nothing)
    • Creating a goal driven culture

      OKR tips:

      • Keep the number of quarterly OKRs to 3-5
      • All key results must result in the obtainment of the objective or else it is not an OKR
      • OKRs are not set in stone, you can change them along the way for the process
      • Goals need to be specific and time bound
      • MyFitnessPal Example

        Intuit Example:

Scoring assessment after: 0.07 - 1.0 is success, 0.4-0.6 progress made but not completed, 0.0-0.04 (failed, little to no progress made)

        Reflection Questions:

        - Did I accomplish all of my goals, why or why not?

        - What obstacles did I encounter?

        - What did I learn that I can apply to next goal?

        - The YouTube story

        - Adobe Check-In’s

        - Bono’s One Campaign

Summary: how to manage lofty goals or a company where there are a million things that are a priority. Measuring things back to Key Results that are measurable and obtainable.
