Whether you’re an entrepreneur or working for Corporate America, it’s so easy to get so immersed and caught up in the things (you think) you need to do. If you don’t take the time to step back and intentionally look at your life, it’s easy to lose your sense of purpose. Today’s guest, Doug Scott, came to a point in his career and life where he had to take a step back, explore things with curiosity, and choose to live a purpose-filled life.
A global leader in entertainment brand marketing, Doug is the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Subnation, the leading media platform for the culture of gaming and decentralized lifestyles. Doug is also a general partner in Surround Ventures, Co-Founder of the Museum of Advertising and a founding partner of Culture Group, an entertainment marketing agency based in Singapore, which manages integrated eSports programs.
Recognized by Adweek as one of the Top 50 Most Influential executives in media and entertainment, Doug has earned over 60 awards for creativity and effectiveness from competitions around the globe.
Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:
Episode Highlights:
[10:41] The Downside of Being in an Industry for Too Long
Balancing work life and personal life can be challenging when you have been working in the same industry for several years. And sometimes, it blurs the line between work and play, especially when you're passionate about what you do. However, it has its repercussions such as burnout, stagnation, or worse, you never get to do the things you really want in life. It’s never too late though. Taking a step back gives you a newer perspective and it opens you up to more than just being in the trenches.
[34:20] The Power of Having a Growth Mindset
Reinventing yourself requires a great degree of emotional maturity. Being able to go from a mindset of – knowing everything to learning everything. Seek to become a multi-hyphenate. Just because you've been working in a specific industry for a while doesn't mean you can't explore and expand your skill sets. Look to different areas in your industry where you can wear multiple hats and make an impact.
[41:58] The Impact of Web 3.0
The world we live in right now has become smaller than ever. We're all so connected to each other through our devices. We're connected to the physical world, and now, we have the ability to change the physical world based on the digital simulation that coincides with it. At the root of Web 3.0 is this decentralization, which is about empowerment. It's changing and enabling us to think differently.
