Set in post Celtic Tiger era Dublin, Each and Every One introduces us to the Shines a typical affluent family whose children are leading a very comfortable and pampered lifestyle thanks to the hard work of their parents who have both come from modest backgrounds.
The central characters are their grown up children - Damien who is a wannaâbe Left wing Socialist politician but who still believes in private schooling for his precious children and spends his time humouring his green Eco correct wife. Eldest daughter Vee is a self-absorbed, shopaholic, who loves socialising and ignores her mounting unpaid parking fines and credit card bills. Niall, the younger brother, lives the life of an extended Gap Year student who has spent many years trying to âfind himselfâ in various exotic locations around the world. Finally, we have the central character, Tara who is a junior journalist with a national newspaper. She likes to feel she is a modern independent minded woman but still lives rent-free under the family roof.
When their parents, Gus and Joan, announce that the Bank of Mom and Dad has dried up the four siblings are forced to adopt their lifestyles to their newly reduced financial situation. While this is a painful process, it also allows time for some secrets to be revealed and for them to reassess their life paths.
I found this to be an engaging tale of modern day living in Ireland during and post-recession. It was easy to relate to the characters and, while they may have been slightly stereotypical, they reflect real life in Ireland. I enjoyed the parallel story too of Taraâs blossoming friendship with middle-aged Carmel and her two grandchildren who live in inner city Dublin in an apartment inhabited by a mix of kind hearted neighbours , drug dealers, murderers and at the mercy of âdo gooderâ local councillors. Some very well drawn characters are also woven into the story of a family coming to terms with their new life circumstances.
You donât need to be residing in Ireland to enjoy this very human and realistic story of modern day living and I would recommend it highly.

This is the first novel by Rachael English that I have read. I loved it. Many Irish authors have been described as 'a second Maeve Binchy' - not an accolade that I have given until now. Today, I truly believe that Rachael English is a worthy successor to Maeve.
